2010 UASAL Excursion - Islands of the Great Salt Lake
We invite all members of the UASAL, along with family members and guests to join us on our annual excursion on June 12.
- We will meet at the Visitor Center at Antelope Island State Park at 9:00 a.m. There is an entrance/causeway access/park use fee of $9.00 per vehicle, so we encourage members and guests to carpool. Higher-clearance vehicles are recommended.
- We will begin our excursion at the Visitor Center, where we will enjoy a presentation on the history and activities associated with Great Salt Lake and its islands by Clay Perschon, Fisheries Research and Special Projects Coordinator, Utah DWR, and other DWR personnel, who will accompany us on our excursion.
- After the presentation, we will travel to various locations on Antelope Island where we can view many of the other SLC islands with binoculars or spotting scopes (bring these), as well as (hopefully) see buffalo and other wildlife. We will also get a good perspective, unavailable from the mainland, of the size of the lake.
- We will travel to the historic Fielding-Garr ranch, where we will tour the site and eat our lunch. The view of the Wasatch Range from this location is excellent. A box lunch and extra drink will be provided for $8 per lunch. Lunch options are listed below. If you wish to bring your own lunch, feel free to do so.
· After lunch, we will travel south to I-80, and will stop at important sites along the East Shore, Black Rock, etc.
- Finally, we will travel to Stansbury Island, where we can get another perspective of the other islands, as well as a good view of the various mineral recovery operations on the lake.
Throughout the day, we will be accompanied by DWR personnel, who will provide a wide variety of information about the history, ecology, hydrology, biology, and economics of the lake and its islands.

2009 Summer Excursion
We are delighted to invite you to a terrific Utah Academy Excursion on Friday, June 5th. This year we will tour the Utah State Capitol in the morning and the Utah Governor’s Mansion in the afternoon; both buildings have recently undergone extensive restoration and reflect a fascinating review of our state’s history, economy, culture and politics. On Friday morning we will begin with a presentation on the history and restoration, then State Representative Becky Lockhart will conduct our Capitol tour, taking us into areas not usually accessible to the general public. We’ll enjoy lunch (included), then in the afternoon we will have a special tour of the Governor’s Mansion. Members of the architectural committee and the Utah State Historical Society will enrich our understanding. We welcome all Utah Academy members and families (mature teenagers or older). The cost is $12 per person to help defray the luncheon expense. The deadline for sign-up is June 1st (we need a count for lunch). This promises to be an informative and memorable tour of two Utah heritage icons. |
